Suggest Treatment For Chronic Ear Pain And Dizziness

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Nov 2015
Question: I have had an ear ache for several (more than 5 months). I went to my family practice and he put me on decongestant and antibiotics. Still hurts. It won't pop" to equalize pressure when I drive through canyons and elevation changes. I have been getting dizzy in the last 2 weeks. I also went to the dentist and have no dental issues.
Additionally maybe I am paranoid... could it be a timorous?

Brief Answer:
Impedance Audiometry. Myringotomy with grommet.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Get an ear examination and an Impedance Audiometry ( Tympanometry ) done.

2. If the test is not normal, get a Myringotomy with grommet insertion done.

3. The chance of a tumor causing this is very less, however a nasal endoscopy and a CT Scan can easily rule this out. This would be more of a concern if this problem is one sided.

4. OTC nasal decongestant drops ( 0.1 % Xylometazoline ) and steam inhalation should be tried before considering surgical intervention.

5. Upload the test results for further treatment options.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

I have also had a non-productive cough that has lingered about the same amount of time. While on the prednisone it improved, but returned.

Is it possibly related? I have never smoked. Does it change your recommendation?

Brief Answer:
No. The cough has to treated separately.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. No. The cough has to be treated separately from the ear problem.

2. The earlier infection or allergy may have triggered of both these problems, but now these issues can be tackled separately. There may be a common post nasal drip causing both theses problems.

3. The cough cam be treated with anti allergic, dry cough mixtures, steam inhalation.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
