Suggest Treatment For Chronic Heartburn While On Prilosec
Some information, and a few questions to better help you sir/ma'am
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome.
Thank you for writing to us.
I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Your son probably suffers from acid reflux (may be a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease/GERD).
This condition is treated with medication like prisolec (omeprazole), along with other steps for management like:
+Dietary changes:
-Avoid fatty food
-Avoid smoking
-Avoid alcohol
-Avoid spicy food
-Avoid fried food
-Avoid stress
-Avoid overeating
-Avoid carbonated drinks
-Drink plenty of water
+Lifestyle changes:
-Lose weight if at all the individual is overweight
-Only mild forms of exercise allowed
And a few other approaches which would be best if discussed with a dietician. But please also note that only taking medications like prisolec will not suffice. Other medications can also be added to the treatment regimen until a significant improvement is seen.
Prisolec and other medications can be discontinued, but only after near complete recovery is seen. But lifestyle and dietary changes have to continue throughout the lifetime.
Now coming to the main part of your query, the phlegm. I would first like to ask what colour the phlegm is:
+Yellow
+Green
+Blood tinge
+Colourless
Also, please ask your son if the mucus or phlegm he has been complaining of is accompanied with a bitter taste ? I shall comment further on the possibility or cause for the phlegm once you revert with a response on these 2 questions, thank you.
I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.
Best wishes.
If the amount is mild, it should not be a cause for concern
Detailed Answer:
Hello once again.
Hemoptysis is seen with GERD, and is not considered anything serious, and can occur with the condition, but if at all the amount is more than it should be (mild with GERD); then it is better investigated by a doctor to rule out any other underlying causes, just to be safer.
But, once all other conditions are ruled out, then the cause is GERD, and the treatment approach needs to be revised.
Best wishes.
