Posted on Fri, 9 Oct 2015
Question: Hello, my 47yr old son has liver disease and Ascites . He has been hospitalised 3 times and had litres of fluid removed. He has been home now a few days and due return to hospital a week after being discharged, but his fluid has returned in just a few days. He seems o.k but can't each much due to it . Can you please tell me if he can recover from this and what if any alternative treatment is there. How long can they keep having the fluid removed? He was an alcoholic most of his life. Sorry for all the questions, but I'm a very concerned Mum. Guess I'm hoping for a miraculous recovery when deep down I don't think there is from what I have read. Thank you and I look forward to your reply.

Brief Answer:
Liver Transplant

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern and am sorry for your distress.

With Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, the liver functions gradually starts to decline. The synthetic function decline predicts overall survival. The scoring system that predicts survival in such patients is known as CTP scoring. It includes the albumin, PT, Bilirubin, ascites , encephalopathy. Based on your description, your son falls into Class C category of this scoring for which 2 year survival is less than 43 %. The only cure for this condition is a liver transplant. The rest of the treatment is supportive at best.

Let me know if you have any query.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
