Suggest Treatment For Cold, Clogged Feeling In Eye And Ear Infection

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Feb 2015
Question: Started feeling symptoms of a cold Christmas Eve. New Years Eve my right ear became very clogged. I went to an urgent care clinic, they said I had a middle ear infection and prescribed Cipro 500MG 2x a day. It is day 4 of taking the medicine, no significant relief. Anything else I can do to get rid of this fullness in my ear? I have no pain or fever. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Most likely causes for this provided ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. If at all ciprofloxacin has not proven to be effective in relieving you of the middle ear infection that was diagnosed then:

+The source for the infection could be viral, which means antibiotics (which are used to treat bacterial infections) will not be effective. With viral infections, only symptomatic treatment will be required and we will have to wait till the infection subsides itself. In the meantime, warm compresses placed around the region of the affected ear, pain management medications, and ear drops to help alleviate the pain and congestion can/should be prescribed.

+The infection could have a bacterial source but ciprofloxacin may just not be effective in your specific case (i.e. you could be resistant to that particular antibiotic). With such a scenario a substitution will be required, for which you will have to revisit your doctors office.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you.

Best wishes.

Thanks for the quick response. Should I take any antiflammatories or decongestants as well?

Brief Answer:
Anti-inflam: yes; decongestants: unsure

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

It was my pleasure entirely.

Anti-inflammatories might be beneficial, but decongestants may not have any purpose in the treatment as the cause for congestion is an infection and inflammation, which will only be cleared once the infection subsides and mildly when inflammation itself reduces.

I hope this clarifies your doubt ma'am. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to be of assistance.

Best wishes ma'am.
