Question: Hello -

My wife XXXXXXX (covered by the same policy that I hold) is 38 weeks 4 days pregnant. She has cold since yesterday and I am worried if the baby will catch cold also. Can she take over the counter medicines for cold/fever? What other precautions she needs to take?

Please advice.

Brief Answer:
antihistaminics...

Detailed Answer:
hello,
thanks for contacting healthcaremagic

At 38 weeks + 4 days pregnancy , she is already at term and is she has cold then she can take TAB CETRIZINE 5mg twice a day for 3 days . Its an OTC antihistaminic and pregnancy safe as well.
Also she may use plain water steam inhalation twice a day to soothen the throat, this would help. Antibiotics should not be considered at present and likely symptoms shall subside with the antihistaminic.
Thirdly it is recommended that she avoids cold beverages and ice creams which can potentially increase the symptoms and stick to normal warm fluids and a balanced warm meals .
