Suggest Treatment For Cold In A Person Post Lobectomy
Question: Dear doctor , my dad had status post left lobectomy when he was 20. He is 70 years old now .He has caught a cold ( flu) right now and we were told that to see which antibodics is working for my dad was by reviewing culture and sensitivity report.
we got done sputum culture to find out the causative organism and then sensitivity report to start appropriate antibiotic therapy.
But since he is already on klacid for 10 days twice 250 mg , the report shows no bacterial infection . Would I ask that is the test still
Accurate when under medication already . His mucus is almost white but still coughing a lot . should he continue with klacid for few more days or increase to 250 mg got three times instead of twice .
Or should he try

Empirically cephlalosporin group of antibiotics like cefixime tablet can also be prescribed.Dual antibiotic will cover much more organisms.
He may need antihistaminics after evaluation.
Besides this,your father need proper clinical evaluation and investigations.Since he is not responding well to klacid,it is important to exclude other causes.
Routine hemogram,random blood sugar and chest X-ray (PA view)should be taken.CT scan of thorax can be done if needed.
Since he is 70 years old,non resolving cough need complete evaluation.
Further treatment plan depend upon investigation findings.
Get well soon.
