Posted on Mon, 24 Nov 2014
Question: My son was diagnosed with an e coli infection in his scalp about a year ago. Since then he's had it cut open 3 times, drained, packed and has been on a collective months of antibiotics. The last time opened it up they left it open and told me I had to pack it twice a day with this special packing I was given. He's been through a lot and I really don't want that to be the only answer they can seem to come up with. Do you have any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
VAC is an enviable option.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,

I understand your query and concern.

Your son seem to have Complicated Surgical wound infection of the scalp.

This needs a key assessment of 2 factors-
1.Of the presence of any undue resistant contamination of wound?.
2. whether or nor closure of wound without any tension can be achieved?

These things require a thorough repeat examinations in the form wound irrigation and serial debridement to ensure the wound bed is ready for permanent definitive closure.

Special material twice daily packing will no longer be helpful in your case.

In your case wound therapy with VAC-vacuum assisted closure device will be viable option. Use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy gives added benefits.

Note:Please consult your surgeon with regards to above treatment options.

I hope I have answered your query.
Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.

I apologize. I did not explain corrrctly. The wound has been closed for a few months. Recently the pussy sores and swelling are returning. I do not want them to cut it open again. Are there any suggested treatments that do not involve reopening his head for a 4th time?

Brief Answer:
No surgical procedure exists without wound opening

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,

Welcome again,

There is no surgical procedure which can treat your pus emanating wound without actually opening it.

Active complete exploration of your wound is healthy and is actually advised to break down all the walls of pus cavities and completely eliminate the infection in order to allow complete healing.

As i already said, VAD and hyperbaric oxygen therapy will help to prevent pus formation with almost near complete healing.

Post your further queries if any,
Thank you.
