Suggest Treatment For Constant Building Of Mucus In The Nasal Cavity

Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: I have had a sinus congestion that has lasted a year almost. It produces a white mucus which seems constant. I do not have a cough, or runny nose. Just am constantly clearing a buildup in my nasal cavity that I spit out. I do however have symptoms of vaginal discharge that I now believe are related. It is a white discharge, no odor and when looked under the microscope she said it had a lot of white blood cells present. I also have a slight burn at times in my urethra. Not when I urinate just constant. Comes and goes. I tested negative for std's or BV. I have takes amoxicillin, doxycycline, metronidazole, flagyll and it always comes back. i've tried to flush out my nasal cavity with a netipot and a steam machine. I've tried to drink an overload of water hoping my body would flush it. I'm so tired of dealing with this. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Seems to be chronic sinusitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Answers and solutions for your queries.

1. Mucus accumulation behind the nasal cavity and constant clearance (hawking) usually occurs due to chronic sinusitis or gastric acid reflex.

2. You need CT scan of para nasal sinuses ( anatomical abnormalities and pathological extent) and diagnostic laryngoscopes ( to deeper part of neck and voice box).

3. There is no relation between vaginal discharge and nasal discharge. Needs ultrasound abdomen and complete urine examination to rule out the cause for burning.

3. Netipot, do clear the mucus secretions from nasal cavity, but not from deeper part of neck.

Kindly discuss with your treating doctor about these inventions and go ahead.

Mean time, stop hawing ( chronic clearing damages mucosa of throat ) and take simple ppi inhibitors (
omeprazole - it's a prescription drug).

What are the treatments for chronic sinuitis? And o have read about two instances where an infection of some sort can cause a return problem vaginally. Candidiasis and chlamdia. You are very quick to dismiss any connection but i do still believe there is a connection. Are there any other rare things that can be linked?

Brief Answer:
Candidiasis is in common in nose.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

1. Chroinc sinusitis (6 months) occurs due to anatomical abnormalities (deviated septum) and pathological extent ( allergy, polyps), where medical management (drugs) will always fail and surgery so the choice of treatment.

2. Candidida and chlamidia (commonest - aspergillus and bacteria) are in uncommon in nose and sinuses.

3. If you are suspicious, kindly go ahead for culture and sensitivity of nasal secretions.

4. I strongly recommend to undergo for CT scan of para nasal sinuses to the exact cause.

All the best. Take care.
