default
Posted on Fri, 14 Aug 2015
Question: For the past day and a half I have had constipation (unable to pass a bowel movement). I have also been having bad back and hip pain for the past day as well. Could they be related? Also what would you suggest for the constipation?

Brief Answer:
Take stool softeners, plenty of fluids.

Detailed Answer:
Hi sir.Thanks for your query.

Yes constipation and lower back/hip pain are related.
I would recommend-

-2 Tablets.Bisacodyl 5mg immediately. Please be advised that you will experience bowel movement after 4-6 hours.

-Take Cremaffin Plus (or lactulose syrup) syrup 15ml every day in the evening (but not before going to bed) & taper it to 10 ml for one more week and stop.
This is a stool softener and eases bowel movement.

Both Bisacodyl and Cremaffin plus are available over the counter.

-Avoid oily, fatty and junk food.
-Add plenty of vegetables, peas, oats and food which add high fibre to your diet.
Fibre holds water in your intestine and adds to the bulk in your stool and prevents constipation. Try using commercially available isphagula husk.
-Drink plenty of water/fluids.
-Walk at-least 30 minutes/day.Walking improves your bowel motion.

Watch out if your pain gets relieved after passing the stools.
