Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2016
Question: Hi! I have been diagnosed with partial paralysis of my intestine because of which i'm unable to pass any stools for days together unless I take a strong laxative..I used to regularly take 2 tablets of dulcoflex until I found out i'm pregnant. I am now 8 weeks pregnant and having severe constipation issues because of which I get a lot of pain and discomfort and bloated stomach. Is it alright for me to continue taking dulcoflex during pregnancy without any harm to the baby? Please advise any other alternative if not so..

Brief Answer:
Yes, you can take that medicine. Quite safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) Constipation is very common during pregnancy and occurs due to effect of the normal hormonal changes of pregnancy on the bowel.

However, preexisting partial paralysis of intestine has greater contributory factor for severe constipation.

2) At this stage, you should continue to take 2 tabs of Dulcoflex for bowel movement regularly. It is quite safe and NOT harmful to growing fetus.

3) Take more green vegetables with your regular meal. Fresh fruits, celery, watercress, cabbage, spinach, wholegrain cereals, wholemeal bread, beans, lentils, pulses etc should be included. These are quite helpful for maintaining regular bowel habit.

4) When you feel the need to go to the toilet, try to give yourself privacy and time. Sit on the toilet, breathe deeply, then exhale so your pelvic floor muscles relax, but try not to strain.

5) Drink more water, take adequate bed rest, avoid strenuous activity, be stress free by doing yoga or meditation and need sound sleep. It makes a healthy life style and improve bowel habit.

Hope I have answered your query. Wish your good health and take care.
