Brief Answer:
cannot say in your particular case.

Detailed Answer:
certainly the spine below the lumbar area controls bowel and bladder function. The classic problem that occurs in this situation is loss of the nerve function to them. This results in decreased sensation, not being able to know when to have a bowel movement and constipation. This can then produce swelling and other problems.

And then there are hospitalization and operation complications. One of the most common complications of any hospitalization is bed sores. These are due to lying on an area without movement. This cuts off the circulation to the area and then there is loss of tissue. The area around the surgery is the LEAST likely place to get this, as you can't lie on it while the surgeon is operating on it! Otherwise this is the most common spot for decubiti (among patients who are lying on their backs... a very common position unless you've had back surgery).
Abnormal bowel movements often cause irritation in this area (hemorrhoids). Cannot say in your case without seeing the area. There can also be local infections from the surgery, from yeast infections after antibiotics, clostridium difficile infections after antibiotics (would have diarrhea with this one).

That would cover most of the common causes of disturbance of that area in a hospitalized patient.
