Question: My 11 year old daughter has had hives for 7 days. She has also had a bad dry cough for 10 days. The doctor can't figure out what it is. She is on benadryl, prednisone, and zantac. Is there anything more I can do?

Brief Answer:
Acute Urticaria

Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome to HCM,

Your daughter is suffering from acute urticaria.
Most common causes are food allergen, medicine, insect bite and infection.

The most common food that causes hives are nuts, chocolate, fish, egg, soya, milk and wheat. Fresh food causes more than cooked one.
Some drugs like Aspirin and NSAID are also responsible.

I will advise you to review your daughter food item take, every time she gets hives, and try to point out food allergies if she have.
Add antibiotic for cough.
I would advise to stop prednisolone as this will increase infection foci, as she is having cough.
It is very difficult to predict the course of urticaria.
Apply calamine lotion 2-3 times a day.
Add Fexofenadine 120 mg once daily.
Hope this is helpful.
Thanks.
