Suggest Treatment For Cough, Nasal Congestion, General Weakness And Lung Congestion

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: I have had a cough for two and a half weeks. It started out slowly with nasal congestion and general weakness, the nasal congestion is gone except for bed time and I feel fine, but the cough persists especially at bed time. I did see a doctor a week ago and he detected very mild lung congestion, but did not order an Xray. I feel a bit better since then, but progress seems very slow.

Brief Answer:
No worries, Self resolving. Symptomatic care

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking at HCM!

I read your question and i understand your concern. Nasal congestion, post nasal dripping, old age and involvement of airways lead to this cough and is resilient some times and takes longer than usual ( which is a week or two) to heal but heal eventually.

Adding antibiotics was wise to prevent any superadded infections which are common in age above 60 and end up as geriatric pneumonia so good decision. I will also help with the lung congestion along with other symptomatic cough remedies.

Reason for not ordering x ray was alright as it was not necessary but doing it would have been good as well. So good in both conditions and no worries.

Rest you are already improving. All you gotta do is continue symptomatic treatment. Meanwhile treat acid reflux or dyspepsia if any , use warm beverages as tonic for the airways and take some antiallergics. If you smoke quitting it would help and using some humidifier in the room will make sure the airways stay moist and do not get irritated and lead to cough.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Regards
Khan
