Suggest Treatment For Depression While On Vyvanse

Question: I have been on vyvanse for over a year now. I believe I am self-medicating with it as it does relieve my depression tremendously but I feel so reliant on it. If I do not take it I feel like I can't get out of bed, focus, or do normal daily tasks. I'm worried I may be dependent. I want to quit but I am afraid of the withdrawal. Is there an antidepressant or other medication that helps with quitting amphetamines and the withdrawal effects? Also, what about replenishing dopamine during the detox process? Is there anything I can take to help with that?

I can understand your concern. Amphetamines are stimulant drugs and are known to cause serious dependence. So stopping cold turkey might result in withdrawal symptoms and could worsen the depressive symptoms. To prevent withdrawal symptoms doses should be tapered gradually.

Drugs like Modafinil can be utilised for Amphetamine withdrawal and will help to maintain the day time alertness. Bupropion which is also an antidepressant drug and has good dopaminergic actions can also help you in normal functioning in absence of Amphetamines. Both these drugs will help to maintain alertness and focus.

So please talk to your Psychiatrist for these drugs.
