Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea And Vomiting

Posted on Mon, 9 Mar 2015
Question: Hello my name is XXXXXXX 1 year ago I went to the ER w symptoms of throwing up & diarrhea. It turned out I had ecoli , 4th stage kidney failure, UTI, pneumonia & toxic lithium levels (1.6). Took the lithium because I'm Bipolar. I was in the hospital for 12 days w a fever of 104 that they had a hard time bringing down. Many different antibiotics were used but they did finally find one. I hallucinated the whole time I was in there. Now I walk w a walker, my speech is messed up, fine motor skills are bad, I have incontinence, my balance is way off & I have a little problem swallowing. Dr's say it was the lithium (which I'm no longer on). They say it poisoned me!! Anything u can tell me would be so appreciated!! Thank you

Brief Answer:
Very poor personal opinion on the use of Lithium

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I am extremely sorry to hear about this unfortunate incident that has affected your health and life so deeply. Unfortunately, I agree with your doctors and medical staff about the cause for your current situation/condition.

Lithium prescriptions need to be monitored with a lot of scrutiny. From various debates and conferences I have even understood that lithium should be avoided until absolutely necessary (and in most cases only if a suitable or required response has not been achieved with other drugs to treat Bipolar disorders).

I would also like to add that this is not the first time a lithium prescription has resulted in such severe (and in my opinion, in poor judgement or unfortunate) consequences. There have been many individuals who have experienced fatal consequences. I am sure you are well aware of the symptoms of such high levels of lithium in the human body, but I shall go ahead and list them for you just in case you didn't. They are:

+Movement disorders
+Memory issues
+Kidney abnormalities (mostly failure)
+Difficulties in retaining salts in the body
+Psychosis
+Tremors
+Poor or extra reflexes
+Speech difficulties (mostly slurred speech)
XXXXXXX my personal opinion on the use of lithium is very different from what most doctors who deal with daily prescription of this extremely dangerous 'supposed' helper. I do not believe it should even be used, and if at all it is, the patient should be warned about the consequences of high levels in the body and so should be ordered to report for monitoring levels at least once a week (if not more). I am deeply saddened after reading your case, as I really wish there were some way we could reverse the severe and sadly irreversible consequences.

I am really sorry.

Best wishes XXXXXXX
