Brief Answer:
Baby may need antibiotic syrup and continue with ORS,rinifol.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Loose stools in infants might be suggestive of intestinal infection, mostly rotavirus or amebic /mixed/ bacterial infection.

I would like to advise that you should continue to maintain the fluid intake of the baby by supplementing with ORS and keep watch on the urine output. But do not give more water as doing so will cause more diarrhea.

The best thing would be to give water replacement with ORS as soon he does loose motions. Give 4 or 5 TSF of ORS one at a time but not more than that.

I would also in favour of his stools test to detect the causative organism as the loose motions are since 5 days.

Your baby will also need some specific drugs (according to the causative organism) like oral Metranidazole and oral antibiotic like Norfloxacin in syrup forms according to his weight.

Also continue with rinifol-z which is a lactic acid bacillus and beneficial to restore normal gut bacterial flora.
Give rice mixed curd (dahi-chaval) 2 to 3 times which would be best to treat lose motions.

For rashes, you can apply rashfree cream over there, but nothing to worry about it as they are likely allergic rashes because of frequent motions.

Since the antibiotics are prescription drugs, please consult a peditaric doctor for that prescription. He will know about it.

Usually loose motions might take 48 hours to subside with above treatment.

Let me know if you have anymore doubts.

Thanks and regards,

Dr.Sandip kabra
