Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea In An Infant
My 1 year old daughter consumed approximately 2 grams of L. arginine 2 days back? Will there be any side effects of it.. like damage to kidney or liver..? She already had diarrhea while she consumed it.. would L. Arginine aggravate diarrhea? Would there be any long term effects of it? And she is on antibiotics now due to a bacterial infection. Would antibiotics cause green poop?I think she would have consumed 3 gms.. her weight is 9.8 kgs
It can aggravate diarrhea
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for asking on this platform
I have gone through the query and do understand your concern.
L arginine can be given in children with a dose of 0.5 gm/kg without any significant side effect.
When taken orally it may cause diarrhea, Nausea, vomiting, breathing difficulty or low blood pressure. It usually does not causes damage to kidney or liver but should be used cautiously in patients with liver and kidney disease.
All these symptoms are usually immediate and long term side effects are not seen as most of the part usually gets eliminated after 2 days.
So I won't get overly worried about the L arginine.
Green poop is common during diarrhea or intestinal infection due to increased gut motility.
Due to in caressed gut motility the pigment in stool called biliverdin(green color) does not get time to get converted into stercobilin (yellow pigment). In most of the cases stool gets its normal pattern after 5-7 days of treatment.
So here I Would suggest you to follow the advise of your doctor, give plenty of fluids and observe for danger signs like frequent vomiting, decreased urine, abdominal distension and excess lethargy or irritability.
If you notice any please contact your pediatrician immediately.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.
