Suggest Treatment For Difficulty In Swallowing Caused By Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Palsy
Start with liquid diet
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query
Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy often causes patients to have difficulty in swallowing of solid food. It usually takes about 6 weeks to a year for some patients to have enough strength to have solid food.
Here are my suggestions
1. Always have food in propped up position with back straight
2. Try to swallow thin liquids like water given through a spoon first, if you are not able to swallow that then please stop immediately
3. If you are able to swallow liqiuids through the spoon then continue to do so and increase the amount to atleast 200 ml
4. Once you are able to swallow thin solids and keep increasing the thickness of the thin liquid to a semi solid slowly over 4-6 weeks time
Please note that this procedure is extremely dangerous and there are chances of aspiration into the lung if the cough reflex has not developed yet. It is best to do it under medical supervision
I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me
Regards
Cough reflex muscles is the problem
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for getting back
Cough reflex muscle is the most important muscle in order to initiate you on solid food. It is important because, if cough reflex is not developed there are high chances for the food to enter the lung instead of the esophagus. Seek help from ENT surgeons to know how well it has developed
