Brief Answer:
Psychological approach is highly advised...
Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
I have gone through the medical history of your husband and feel sorry for the situation he is in.
The very first thing is to keep him well-hydrated through consumption of plenty of fluids (water is the best) and follow a strict diet for diverticulitis. Regular follow ups with GI specialist is needed to ensure everything is ok.
With regards to his bulimia, to my opinion, it is time he gets psychological help. That is the best solution for him. As he is a very educated man, he will understand the importance of this approach and will collaborate.
Hope it helped! Let me know if I can assist you further!

Brief Answer:
No connection...
Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
There is no connection between bulimia and his diverticulitis. Diarrhea is one of the symptoms of diverticulitis, especially in the acute stage.
Diarrhea might lead to dehydration. That's why it is compulsory to keep him well hydrated. If he is well hydrated, his bowels will function better as all other body organs.
Bulimia is a psychological problem. He is having diarrhea and other bowel problems. As his psychological state is down, he ends up being bulimic unconsciously as his mind thinks this resolves his problems (obviously being unconscious). That's why psychological approach will help ease his mind and make him conscious that this is not the right solution for him.
GI specialist and psychologist should be consulted.
All the best!
