Question: Our baby is almost 4 months old.
Baby is crying a lot when we touch his right ears,we suspected an infection and our doctor has advised for OFLOX which had given couple of times today.
may be because of the pain in ears Baby is refusing to drink mother's milk, we feed the Nestle NAN 1 PRO most of the time from past 2-3 days.
Also we observed little vomiting few times today.

What can be done to reduce pain in his ears?
What is the reason for baby refusing mother's milk?

Brief Answer:
Local hot water fomentation will be helpful

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day
Dear Mr XXXXXXX

Ear infection or earache should not normally result in refusal of feeds. Vomiting could be due to

1. Intolerance to artificial feed

2. Inadequate burping

3. Associated Gastroesophageal reflux

Baby child ideally be exclusively breast feed till 6 months of age. I would suggest you the following

1. If possible continue exclusive breast feeding

2. Do not excessively handle the affected ear

3. Local application of hot water fomentation will be helpful : apply a soft towel soaked in lukewarm water

4. Ear infection is sometimes associated with nasal blockage that could be one of the cause for refusal to feed. 3 to 4 drops of normal saline drops in each nose 4 to 6 times a day will help

5. If baby is not feeding well from bottle or breast then feeding with watti and spoon can be considered

6. Feed on demand

7. Burp well after feeds

8. If the vomiting still occurs then gastric motility increasing drug like Domperidone drops will be helpful

Thank you for your quick advice.

Vomiting has reduced but baby is still suffering from ear pain due to infection.

One of my doctors, advised OTOGESIC ear drops and we also gave it once this morning.

Problem is baby refusing breast milk and also drinks formula(NAN PRO 1) may be because of the pain in ears. Even after drinking formula milk, baby cries sometimes due to the pain.

Is it ok to feed NAN PRO 1 for few days if baby refuses to feed from breast?
Is OTOGESIC safe for 4 months old baby?
