Suggest Treatment For Early Stage Prostate Cancer In A 80 Year Old
Question: thank you. I have been diagnosed w prostate cancer.. Biopsy showed 5 positive and 7 negative.
Urologist says it is moderately aggressive. I am age 80 and in good overall health.. and he says
I have option of radiation (5 weeks) or surgery ( and sometimes a little radiation is done
after the surgery.) How do I decide? I don't know right questions to ask. I am of the belief that robo
surgery would be more precise than radiation and less likely to have permanent leakage afterward.
How do I decide? Do I need to ask doc more questions before I decide? XXXXX

Brief Answer:
radiation is preferred
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
Yes, both are options in early stage prostate cancer. But I am inclined towards radiation. Radiation is less invasive and equally effective. Long term complications including leakage is less with radiotherapy.
And not to forget that even after surgery, radiation may be required. That is not little but only somewhat less than only radiation.
You should ask regarding short and long-term effects of both treatment in detail. And the 5 yr or 10 yr survival rates in both modalities.
Hope this helps. If you can send copies of reports then I can guide you better.

thank you so much. I value your feedback. I am requesting
test results from my primary care doctor and will send to you
when received so you have more information. May be a few days.
What I am getting is that the radiation after surgery may not
just be a little. and.. to my XXXXXXX that radiation is equally as
effective as surgery. I was thinking robo assisted surgery would
be more precise.

Brief Answer:
not necessarily robotic is more precise
Detailed Answer:
Robotic surgery has less complications and earlier recovery but not necessarily more precise than open surgery.
Modern image guided radiation is highly precise.
