Suggest Treatment For Elevated ALT Levels While Having Metastatic Prostate Cancer

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Jun 2016
Question: I was diagnosed with metatastic prostate cancer about 5 years ago. Now, the wheels are falling off, as the disease has aggressively spread to my lungs, etc. My ALT is rapidly increasing, particularly over the past few months, and is now about 567. Other blood counts like HCT reflect disease's progress. I realize the high ALT is likely a result of the spread of my bone met, but is there something from a dietary standpoint (I hardly drink, if ever, now) that I can do to halt this rise, or is it something I just should expect to live with?

Brief Answer:
Needs further investigation

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

It is best you get a bone scan to confirm the mets.

If the mets are present, it is advisable to go on for radiotherapy and as required chemotherapy.

The bone pain can be due to Osteoporosis, so kindly have diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D like eggs, milk, yoghurt, Nuts. Get a Serum Calcium and Vitamin D tested.

The bone pain will be present till radiotherapy is done. Calcitonin can be taken nasally to reduce the bone pain till then.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

I neglected to mention that I have had at least 25 days of radiotherapy over the past five years, most recently last March on my hip, where the disease has inhibited movement. This last round of radiation helped me walk without pain again.

My question was with regard to the ALT test. Other than it being a marker on the aggressive spread of my bone mets (I have had lots of PET, MRI, CT, etc every few months or so), is the high ALT cause for concern with regard to creating other symptoms, or is it something I can live with?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Do liver function tests as well

Detailed Answer:
You will need to get further evaluated to rule out the mets, liver and gall bladder disease. I don't think any need to worry further as it must be part of the radiotherapy and other medical therapy you are receiving
