Question: how long does it take for ast to return to normal. my recent blood work had all normal liver enzymes except ast, which was 114, likely related to too much wine during the past few months. What things can I do to help, besides cutting out the alcohol

Brief Answer:
6 weeks after cutting alcohol...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

1. It will take at least 6 weeks for the AST to turn to normal range.

2. Meanwhile, you should not be drinking alcohol during this time and should follow healthy lifestyle and diet regimen. Drinking too much alcoholic drinks including wine will aggravate your situation.

3. Vit.E supplementation is advised.

4. Specific diet changes include:
- no smoking
- no administering of illicit drug
- be careful with medications you take except for vit.E supplementation
- increase water intake
- eat more fresh foods rich in antioxidants (green leaves, fruits and vegetables, etc.)
- avoid oily, spicy, processed foods that would cause your liver to work harder

5. Increased physical activity can also improve your AST numbers

Hope it helped!

Detailed Answer:
Hi back

In most of patience AST level come back to normal after 5-6 weeks of no alcohol, but in some patients it may be more earlier like 2-3 weeks.

To speed up this process please avoid stress, eat healthy, use vitamine E and sylimarine.

Your AST level is not too high so I expect that it will came to normal level after 2-3 weeks.

Hope it was of help.
