Suggest Treatment For Elevated Liver Enzymes Levels
Question: Hello,
A recent blood test showed my ALT @ 209 - AST @ 153 and GGT @ 168.
I am a make 38 years old, 170 lbs, 5,9 and healthy otherwise.
I had been consuming approx 30 drinks a week, took advil for back pain almost daily as well as Zantac and was on antiobitoics (cipro and z-pack) prior to the bloodwork.
Since Sept 1st I have had zero alcohol, advil, zantac or antiobiotics and have been eating healthy and taking milk thistle, vitamin E and C daily. I have a follow up on October 1st and plan on abstaining from the above until then. Two questions please...
1) do you think my liver functions will improve by Oct 1st given the above and if so by how much?
2) if the functions improve to within the normal range is it reasonable that I then drink a glass of wine a few times a week with dinner? I plan on stopping the advil, zantac and am now off the antibiotics.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Elevated liver function most likely alcohol induced
Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns
You recent elevated liver functions are more than likely due to the alcohol consumption. Since you stopped drinking the liver functions will probably reduce to normal by your next office visit in October.
If your liver functions return to normal then it is OK to drink one glass of wine with dinner. It was the sheer amount of alcohol you were drinking that caused your liver functions to be so high.
I hope I answered your questions. Please contact us again if you have any further questions

many thanks. Do you have any other suggestions in terms of vitamins or supplements that will aid in the detoxification of my liver? Keeping in mind I am already taking milk thistle, vitamin E and C. Thank you Dr Schubert
Brief Answer:
I do not recommend any additional vitamins
Detailed Answer:
I do not recommend any additional vitamins. There has been some studies looking at milk thistle as a liver detoxification supplement but it did not help. The best thing is maybe talking a one a day vitamin and eating a good well balanced diet with regular exercise. Just by you stopping the alcohol you have greatly improved your overall health.
