Suggest Treatment For Elevated Sugar And Triglyceride Levels
Question: Dear Doc - I am a male 41 years of age . Have a family history of diabetics & cardiac...I lead a fairly active life and conscious about health etc etc . Since past 2 years odd I have been neglecting a healthy lifestyle . Last week I underwent our office Biennial Health Check Up which had some surprises for me . Request your help in assessing the report and guiding me on to what should be done to manage the sugar (first time reported) and elevated Triglycerides

Hi, I had gone through your query and understood your concerns.
Sir, After going through your query, The results of concern are seen in Triglycerides, cholesterol and blood glucose levels.
The normal range for high triglycerides is under 150mg/dl and cholesterol is under 180mg/dl for your age. You should be worried but not too much regarding cholesterol. Your cholesterol is not that high to be very worried. You may easily get back to normal range. But triglycerides are high of concern.
I see similar cases among the people of your age group who visit my clinic. In the first meeting, I advise my patients to go on lifestyle modifications for three months. I retest them again after three months and if they continue to be in high range then I advise them to take statin group of medicines like Atorvastatin and Pravastatin. You can discuss regarding the dosage with your treating Doctor.
The blood sugar levels are also higher to normal. Even for high blood sugar levels we first try out change in life style and diet for about a month and see whether controlled. If not controlled, Then we go for a medical management under guidance of a local diabetologist which includes a very effective anti diabetic drugs which on regularly taking are very good in controlling blood sugar.
For the next 2-3 months, try to follow the following guidelines. Then get your cholesterol checked again.
High fibre diet, green leafy vegetables, fruit.
Cut down the processed food. White bread, doughnuts, white sugar, pizza should be completely avoided.
A 40 minute physical activity every day like morning walk, evening walk or a visit to the gym or swimming pool.
Start on these changes and get back to me in 2 to 3 months.
