What Causes Vaginal Itching After Taking Hydrochlorothiazide?

I have been taking hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 MG for a few months now, and am having severe vaginal itching. Could the medicine be the cause? If so, if I stop taking it, will the itching stop, or might I need some other meds to clear it up? I am 56 years old and weigh 176 lbs. I have a family history of heart disease and hypertension. In addition to the hydrochlorothiazide, I take Metoprolol Succ ER 100 MG, Citalopram HBR 40 MG, Nexium DR 40 MG, and Pravastatin Sodium 20 MG. I have taken these last four drugs for many years. Thank you for any advice you might give me.

Hi,

Yes, hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) can cause vaginal itching as a side effect. HCTZ is a diuretic medication that is commonly used to treat hypertension and edema. It works by increasing urine output and reducing the amount of fluid in the body.

One of the less common side effects of HCTZ is genital itching or rash. This can be due to an allergic reaction or irritation caused by the medication. If you suspect that HCTZ is causing your symptoms, you should speak to your doctor about discontinuing the medication or switching to an alternative treatment.

Stopping HCTZ may help to alleviate vaginal itching, but your doctor may also recommend an antihistamine or topical cream to relieve the symptoms. It is important to speak to your doctor before stopping or changing any medication, as abruptly stopping a medication can have other negative effects on your health.

In addition, if the itching is due to a vaginal infection or other condition, your doctor may prescribe other treatments to address the underlying cause. It is important to seek medical attention if you have any persistent or concerning symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
