Suggest Treatment For Enlarged Prostate

Question: My father is 75 years old; For some other reasons we did an ultrasound of his lower body in 1998 and found enlarged prostate (BPH), as he had no problem so we didn't take a look at it. Just for double check 2.5 years ago we did a checkup with a doctor and he did a flowmetry - 16 ml XXXXXXX speed and averge 6 ml/second. Doctor advised 'urimax' and he is taking that for last 2.5 years. He doesn't go frequently and doesn't take much time in urination .. so as per him he doesn't see any problem. One week back we again did a uroflowmetry and result avg speed 7 ml/sec and XXXXXXX speed 12 ml/sec. Doctor says speed is low so go for surgery .. not sure if we go for surgery in this case as patient looks ok .. post void residue was seen at 86 ml in bladder in 6 month back ultrasound. What do you advise?

Brief Answer:
Better to get him operated.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your father has enlarged prostate .

His uroflometry has revealed maximum flow rate to be 7 ml/Sec and post void urine residue is 86 ml which is quite significant.(Normal post void residue should be 5-10 ml)..
The significant post void residue with poor urine flow rate are strong indications for going for surgery to resect the enlarged prostate and make the passage clear of obstruction due to enlarged prostate.

This (TURP) is a gold standard procedure to resect the enlarged prostate, widely practised all over the world.and offers permanent cure and helps to improve quality of life in future.

Please go ahead and get it done There is nothing to be worried about the surgery..

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,
I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.
