Brief Answer:
How benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) develops

Detailed Answer:
Both aging and the male hormone testosterone seem to be necessary for the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a very common but incompletely understood consequence of aging.

Testosterone acts on the prostatic cells which produces dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The DHT seems to be necessary for the development of BPH over time. The cell numbers increase, making the prostate bigger. So the action of testosterone on the prostate cells over time builds the size of the prostate up.

This happens to almost all men as they get older.
