Suggest Treatment For Erectile Dysfunction In An Elderly Person

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Feb 2017
Question: I am a 55 year old white male. I take medications for both high blood pressure and cholesterol. Over the last year I have been unable to get and maintain an erection while with a partner. I can masterbate and still have a desire for sex. I have lost 30 pounds this last year and feel good about my body but don't understand why my penis isn't working like it should. I have taken my medications for over 10 years so I don't think that is the problem. I feel like I am too young to have to deal with a limp dick problem. Your help will be appreciated!

Brief Answer:
Get sugar levels checked and look for any beta blockers drugs in BP meds

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what you had been experiencing lately. Based on the history you have shared, it's important to share details of blood pressure medicines as some medicines like beta blockers may cause erection issues. These side effects may express over the years.

Another significant details as you have mentioned, is Weight loss of 30 pounds and if it wasn't because of intentional Weight loss excercises or diet plans, it shouldn't be ignored and may need evaluation with basic blood work and ESR, CRP and LDH, and a detailed body examination to rule out any alarming cause.

I would recommend to include fasting and random sugar levels, alongwith thyroid profile as these can also cause wieght loss and erection problems simultaneously. If needed a urologist or an endocrinologist for your erectile dysfunction may be needed to intervene for a pharmacological therapy with sildenafil etc.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.

Dr. Ulabidin -
The weight loss was intentional. I gave up most meat and focus on vegetables. I am 5 ft 8 inches and weigh 155 lbs. I do not think that is the problem.
I take a small amount of a beta blocker med and a cholesterol med. The doses are very low and my blood levels are within normal range. I go to my family doctor 2 times a year and he does blood level checks. However, I have never had my thyroid levels checked. I have no family history of thyroid issues.
I still do not think that we have the answer yet. Is there any other issues that could contribute to my erection problem?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
There can be other issues but first these need to be re evaluated

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Thanks for sharing the feedback. If wieght loss was intentional, then it is not a very alarming matter however as you have mentioned the drug history, if small dose of beta blockers can cause erectile dysfunction. You need to discuss with your treating physician to replace it with other options like ACE or angiotensin receptor blockers etc to avoid this possibility.

Other possibilities as you have suspected, yes these may exist ranging from essential micronutrients and vitamin defficiencies to even anxiety or depression or lack of concentration. You can start with the supplements replacement, like Vitamin B complexes specially B12 and folic acid as well as micronutrients like zinc, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Their levels can be reconfirmed but their replacement I'm small doses doesn't cause any side effects.

Next step should be to get detailed sessions with sexual counsellors and motivational psychologists which help to acquire control and concentration as well to overcome other distractors like anxiety or other stressors. Wishing you a steady and healthy routine. Regards.
