Brief Answer:
Eustachian tube dysfunction

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that you are having ear pain discomfort and ringing all associated with eustachian tube dysfunction. The cause may have been the air travel and the pressure differences while on the air plane. The treatments your doctors suggested all work and you can do all of them. I have found the treatment that works best is just plain old time. The treatments help a little but truely the real thing to heal your ear is your own body.

For you I would recommend using the afrin nose spray and the decongestant sudafed. This will help open the sinuses and allow for drainage. The zyrtec which is an antihistamine may actually cause drying and thickening of the mucous. This could be counter productive.

The nettie pot and nasal saline really serve no purpose for ear problems. But if it help clear nose passages then continue to use it.

If all these measures don't help and you still have fluid behind the eardrum then you may need a course of oral prednisone. The prednisone will stop any inflammation and help clear the ear.

I hope I answered your question. please contact us again if you have any additional questions

Brief Answer:
3 days XXXXXXX is correct

Detailed Answer:
Yes you are correct the afrin should not be used more than 3 days in a row. I would recommend using it daily for those three days in hopes of helping to reduce the pressure in our ears. Then take a drug holiday for 3 days and if needed repeat for three days again
