Suggest Treatment For Fever And Chest Cold In Child

Question: Hi doc! My 3 nd 1/2 yr old son is having fever from Friday.on that day he didn't hav chest cold...but today my doc said he has chest cold...he was constantly having 100 fever twice or thrice a day...from Friday to Tuesday I hav him cepodum xp,deletus nd cypnis drops...Tuesday my doc changed medicines to podonis ns grolinctus bm...along with this crocin all 5 ml nd cypnis at night 30 drops...he seems better sumtime nd develops fever suddenly but not exceeding 101 ...I m worried tat he is been having fever for the past five days...I m confused nd worried...pls guide me

I can understand your concern.
The most common cause of fever with cough and cold in this age is some viral infection.In viral infection fever usually starts declining after 3-4 days.
If there is persistent high grade fever,worsening of cough,poor oral acceptance,rapid breathing or excessive lethargy or irritability,diagnosis other than viral infection should be suspected.
I won't get overly worried as in your case the child has none of the above symptoms.
Still I would like to get complete blood count(CBC) and CRP(C reactive protein an indicator of bacterial infection)done to be on safer side.
Deletus contains dextromethorphan a cough suppressant.I don't prescribe cough suppressant in child unless the cough is very severe.Similarly Cypnis contains cyproheptadine an appetite stimulant.This should also be avoided in children because of its known side effects.
So if there is mild to moderate cough,please stop Deletus and also Cypnis.Grilinctus BM will take care of mild cough.
