Question: I am 73, female, have had c diff in the past which left me with IBS. This is something new, though. Fever of over 101, and mucus just popping out of the anus whenever it wants to! This last time there was a pink tinge to some of it.

Hi, welcome to HCM, any stool symptom accompanied by fever,

Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome to HCM, any stool symptom accompanied by fever, indicates an infection--with mucous and blood it could be amoebic. IBS will not lead to fever. Please get a stool examination done and consult your doctor for appropriate antibiotics.
Meanwhile go on a soft diet --carrot soup, soya milk, yoghurt. Immodium can be increased to twice a day. Regards

I have a lactose intolerance. Does that change your recommendation on what to eat?

It also occurred to me that first, I thought this was due to a large clump of goat cheese on a salad I ate Friday night---thought this could be caused by lactose.

And then I thought that I have been taking more D-Mannose than usual as well, since I had been bothered by a UTI. The Internet said D-Mannose, in too-large quantities, can also cause diarrhea. Of course this isn't exactly diarrhea. It's just mucus popping forth. And the last one was not pink tinged, just a light yellow.

The fever is gone.

Does any of this change your opinion?

Brief Answer:
Hi, it sure does. Avoid the yoghurt part.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, it sure does. Avoid the yoghurt part. And it could have been due to D-Mannose. It could settle with immodium twice a day. But why not still do a stool check? It is always better. Regards
