Suggest Treatment For Food Allergy

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Jul 2014
Question: I have a 10 year old son who has severe food allergies to whole class of foods- sulfites and salicylates. He gets severe facial swelling and asthma from eating most foods including vegetables, fruits and most meats. His diet is limited mainly to carbs and occasional protein which has to be followed by doses of benadryl to reduce asthma and facial swelling. He has been under the care of an allergist for many years. Very recently he began to complain of pain in the upper left abdomen and had flu symptoms but those went away when flu season at his school ended. More recently, he complained of nausea, sometimes while eating, sometimes some time after eating. He seems to have lost some weight and his skin looks lighter complexioned than usual. The whites of his eyes are not yellow but his skin has more yellow tones to it- even, not patches. His finger nails appear whiter than usual- decreased pink

Symptoms could be due to allergic gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms,

From the description given these symptoms are typical of allergic gastro-intestinal anaphylaxis. It usually occurs in relation to food allergy. Apart from it follwoing possibility needs to be considered
1. Eosinophilic Gastritis / Gastro-oesophageal reflux
2. Protein loosing enteropathy
3. Iron, Zinc and Vitamin deficiency especially Vitamin B12

The only therapy proved effective for food allergy is an elimination diet. Most gastrointestinal manifestations resolve within several days, although some may take weeks (food-induced enteropathy).

I would suggest you the following

A. INVESTIGATION FOR FAILURE TO THRIVE AND WEIGHT LOSS
1. Complete Blood count along with Peripheral smear examination
2 Serum Total protein, albumin and globulin level
3. Serum IgE levels
4. Vitamin B12 Level

I would suggest the following remedies which will be helful

1. Combination of Lansoprozole which suppresses gastric acid secretion will be helpful. Also Domperidone which is gastric motility increasing drug will give relief from vomiting
2. Iron and Multi Vitamin supplements
3. Omega 3 fatty acid and medium chain triglyceride supplements: Oral supplementation with MCT (Medium chain triglycerides ) will be helful in weight gain
4. Avoid milk especially cow milk
5. Immunity boosters like XXXXXXX gooseberry may be tried( Based on availability in your given geographical location)
6. Consider giving dry dates: There are calorie rich and help in weight gain

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take Care
