Suggest Treatment For Food Poisoning With Vomiting, Diarrhea And Stomach Pain
My son is 10 yrs old and he is having food poisoning with vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain. He is having this since today morning. Already administered 1 XXXXXXX of Econorm. What is the correct dosage of OFM suspension for him? If I need to give him OFM tablets please let me know the strength of the medicine.
ORS is the mainstay of treatment.

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. It seems that your child has an episode of gastroenteritis or food poisoning. You need to give your child some antiemetic like ondansetron as and when needed, especially before feeds (15 min-30 min prior to feeds). It is ok that you have given Econrm. The mainstay of treatment is breast milk and ORS (oral rehydration solution). Unless the lost salts and fluids are replenished the child would become dehydrated. The urine output needs to be monitored. If the frequency comes down it indicates dehydration and calls for additional supplementation of fluids. But if the child becomes lethargic you would need to take her to a hospital without delay.
You need not give OFM Suspension. Irrespective of its use it will take 3-5 days for the episode to subside. If you still want to give it, the dose appropriate for your child should be 10 ml twice daily. Alternatively half a tablet can be given. I would strongly advise against the unnecessary use of antibiotics.
You need to be patient. The vomiting may persist for a couple of days before it resolves.
Let me know if I could help further.

Hello Dr. Diptanshu, I forgot to ask, what should be the dosage of ondansetron for my child ( 10 yrs, 39 Kgs).

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. You can give OFM as long as you want as you are uselessly giving it anyway. The standard course of OFM is of 5 days.
The dose of ondansetron for your child would be 4 mg per dose. It can be given when required, preferably not more than thrice a day.
