Suggest Treatment For Frequent Bowel Movements

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Aug 2015
Question: I have been having trouble with bowel movements for a week. I will pass small amounts frequently throughout the day with no feeling of relief or completion afterwards. The stool is soft and looks like it was pushed through a form. I have tried fiber and laxatives to restore regularity with no change. I'm a 22 year old male.

Brief Answer:
Might be initial stages of IBS

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
From your description, it looks like initial stages of Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS or it might be a long standing stomach infection. If such a patient presented to me, I would have suggested the following-

Diet modification with plenty of water, small frequent meals with more dietary fibers and less fat and junk.
Regular exercise which enhances metabolism.
A course of antibiotics with ofloxacin-ornidazole for 5 days in case there is a stomach infection.
A course of 15 days of normaxin containing clinidium, chlordiazepoxide etc.
A course of pantoprazole-levosulpiride once daily for 15 days.
Relaxation of mind and dont worry.

You can consult your family or treating doctor about the above and get these prescribed.

Hope this was useful.
Consult me for any further queries.
Regards.

Would there be any indicators to look for that would point to an infection vs IBS?

Brief Answer:
Follow as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Well IBS is mainly a clinical diagnosis. Hence clinical features of the patient is to be checked regularly. Increased frequency of stool without any proper predisposing factors but increased tension might be leading to IBS.
An infective cause is to be suspected when there is stomach pain, a history of taking rich spicy meal, or associated fever etc. Increased levels of infective markers can be of help too.

Wish you good health.
Regards.
