The diarrhea needs to be classified whether its infectious , non infectious or inflammatory especially if hospital admission was required. If there was associated fever, blood in stool and tenesmus then antibiotics along with isotonic fluid replacement would be required as part of the treatment.

In case of chronic diarrhea, mal absorption syndromes and Irritable bowel syndrome diarrhea predominant should be considered. Inflammatory conditions like ulcerative colitis and crohns disease would also constitute the differential diagnosis. Workup would require clinical assessment in light of the history as the investigations would depend upon it.
