Question: I have been having horrible gas. It is painful and suffer tasting. i have been belching as well as passing huge amounts of gas. I have been so nauseated that I have been taking zofran but, that provides no relief at all. I went to the clinic by my home and the PA felt like it was just a bad bout of gas and told me to take zantac and watch what I ate. I can't eat it makes me sick. I can only tolerate peanut butter crackers and water. I have this feeling that it is my gallbladder but, I do not present with any pain in my right upper abdomen. Could I be pregnant? I took a test and it came back negative but, it could have been to early. I have had different bouts with this for about a yr however it always seemed to resolve on its own. This time around has been absolutely horrible to the point that it has really affected my life and the things I do on a daily basis. What do you think this could be?

Brief Answer:
Maybe Gastritis or Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

Your symptoms can be due to gastritis or irritable bowel syndrome(IBS). Both are aggravated due to stress. People who have a tendency to be nervous can develop gas, diarrhea, constipation or nausea/vomiting. When dietary changes aren’t effective, other treatments, such as relaxation therapy, may help.

You can try the following home remedies:

- Eat small frequent meals.

- Drink adequate fluids.

- Apple cidar vinegar: Dilute one tablespoon in a glass of warm water and drink before a meal to reduce gas and bloating after a meal.

- Probiotics such as yogurt help conditions such as IBS.

- In case of gastritis you can use over the counter antacids for 2 weeks for relief of symptoms.

- In case of IBS there are some prescription drugs such as TCA, etc.

In case your symptoms persists or worsens, I would suggest you to meet physician or gastroenterologist for a detailed examination and treatment.

I hope this answered your query.

Thank you for your reply, I have IBS and have had it for years at least 20. I also have MS so my digestive system is already slowed down because of this. I have put in a call to my PCP this morning so hopefully they will do some tests to rule out different diagnosis and then diagnosis me with the right thing.

Brief Answer:
Meet a dietitian

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

As you have MS with IBS I think you would have understood by now that there is no permanent cure. It is best for you to visit your PCP for a detailed examination and treatment follow regularly.

Try diet low in carbs like:
- Almond, coconut, rice, and soy milks
-Bananas
-Bell peppers
-Blueberries
-Carrots
-Cucumbers
-Grapes
-Oats
-Potatoes
-Quinoa
-Rice
-Spinach, XXXXXXX and other leafy greens
-Tangerines
-Tomatoes

The goal is to figure out what foods trigger your digestive problems and create a diet that gives you all the nutrients you need and only includes the you can handle. I would suggest you to meet a dietitian for a diet chart, for better management of your condition.

I hope this answered your query.
