Suggest Treatment For Gastritis And Severe Acid Reflux
I am an 18 year old male with gastritis and gastro esophageal reflux disiease. I had a Nissen Fundoplication done in 2014. I am currently taking Dexilant 60mg and Levosulpiridia 25mg twice daily. I am also taking Famotidine 40mg before I go to bed. I am still suffering from acid reflux daily. My main symptom is nausea which does not allow me to eat meals consistently. I am currently 98 pounds. I was wondering is their any other medication I could be taking to combat this problem?
Very few medications are used to treat GERD sir, few more surgeries listed
Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.
Thank you for writing to us.
I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. There is one addition you can try, discuss their implementation and practicality with your prescribing doctor sir:
+Baclofen: Helps the lower oesophageal sphincter to relax and thus reduces reflux
But other than this, you should work towards lifestyle modifications like:
+Diet that does not trigger increased acid production
+Avoid stress
+Avoid fatty food, fried food, oily food
+Avoid vigorous exercise
+Avoid tea and/or coffee
+Avoid carbonated drinks
+Avoid smoking
+Avoid alcohol
+Drink plenty of water
and many others, which I am sure you are acquainted with.
Nissens fundoplication has best results, but as it doesn't seem to have helped you much I would recommend surgeries like:
+Highly selective trunkal vagotomy
+Selective trunkal vagotomy
+Use of Linx device
I am sorry there are not many more options when it comes to medications that can be used to combat GERD, but I have tried my best to provide you with as much information as I can currently think of.
I really hope find permanent relief from this condition, please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.
Best wishes.
Can you explain Baclofen in greater detail and how it can assist my condition.
Thanks,
XXXX
Of course, it would be my pleasure to do so
Detailed Answer:
Hello once again Mr. XXXXXXX
Of course, there are 2 sphincters in the oesophagus. One on top, which is a true sphincter and prevents reflux (the upper oesophageal sphincter); and a false sphincter which is made up by muscle constrictions (the lower oesophageal sphincter).
When the lower oesophageal sphincter muscles weaken, it causes acid reflux. Nissen fundoplication also aims at making a false sphincter a little stronger in the region using flaps from the stomach.
Baclofen helps by strengthening the muscles in the region which can contribute towards reducing reflux sir. Although the action of baclofen sounds really reassuring, it is still a medication that cannot be used alone, and needs help from other medications as well. Only a cumulative action of all the medications can cause some amount of relief from the individual.
I hope I have explained things in a manner best understood by you. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help XXXXXXX
Best wishes.
