Question: What's going on with my throat? Please see attached picture.

The back of my throat and soft palate is red and very vascular. There are small bumps on the back of my throat. It does not hurt to swallow. I have a tickle in my throat that causes me sometimes to cough, otherwise I have no other symptoms. I also have these small white fluid filled blisters that form on the palate then burst, I think the ENT called them lymph node aggregates. I've tried so many different medications and I am still suffering with this problem.

Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Granular Pharyngitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The image shows Granular Pharyngitis which is a very common condition in which the lymphoid tissue, mucosa, minor glands and even deeper tissues in the throat are inflamed.

2. This makes the throat sensitive and hence the tickle in the throat that makes you cough.

3. Common causes for this condition is throat irritation due to allergy, post nasal drip, acid reflux, infections, mouth breathing, air pollution and exposure to tobacco.

4. The source of the irritation to the throat must be identified to reverse this condition. The current medication is fine, and I would recommend bland food, medicated gargles (oral rinse) and a short course of oral steroids. The lymphoid hypertrophy can be cauterised carefully by coblation (a new technology) if there is no response to medication.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
