Brief Answer:
wow there sure is !

Detailed Answer:
lidocaine as a patch is over 75% likely to work very very well.
The creme doesn't get in enough to work
It was developed espeically for THIS.
As a back up plan, any drug that damps down nerves is better than 50/50 likely to work. (shingles is uniquely susceptible to treatment with nerve pain drugs). these include but are NOT limited to gabapentin, amitryptiline, and pregabalin.
but go with the lidocaine patch first.

Brief Answer:
yes it matters

Detailed Answer:
near and in toward the spine. Probably not the best to put it on the infected area due to direct irritation of the adhesive, but that varies. BUT it ONLY has an effect in a very limited area in width and depth so it has to be able to contact the irritated nerve. Pain goes OUTWARD, so it has to be in toward the spine from the painful area or it won't affect the part that hurts.
