Suggest Treatment For Hamstring Injury In Buttock

default
Posted on Wed, 24 Feb 2016
Question: I have what I believe is a hamstring pull or strain. I have pain just under the buttock. This happened on January 12th. I've been treating it with Ibuprofen and icing. I've also elevated the leg as much as I can. I have not been doing the activity which caused the injury. After a few days it was better but now doesn't seem to be any better than it was about 5 days ago.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from a Hamstring injury. These are very common injuries and can slow an athlete down quite a bit. You are already resting it using ice and ibuprofen. These are good conservative treatments. I would add to your treatment if you can afford it is Massage therapy. Usually after an injury to the hamstring the muscle tightens up and continues to cause pain. WIth a good deep tissue massage they can release some of that tension and improve your recovery period.

Your doctor would only be able to prescribe medication for pain control like hydrocodone or other opiates. NSAIDs prescription are no better than OTC ibuprofen or naprosyn just that they are at higher doses.

In summary
1. continue current treatment including NSAIDs
2. Add massage therapy
3. MD for pain control opiates
4. Time to heal 1-2 weeks

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions
