Suggest Treatment For Hard Movable Bump On Scalp

Posted on Fri, 23 Jan 2015
Question: Hi, I have a hard slightly movable bump on my scalp. It has been there at least a month. I would say that it is half the diameter of a XXXXXXX I was ignoring it because I have had similar bumps on my scalp which eventually disappeared (though they were never this large). I am 63 and have over productive sebaceous glands since I was a teenager. Today I discovered another bump on the back of my neck, just below the hair line, again hard and slightly movable. I should mention neither bump or lump is tender or painful. I may have had the neck bump for some time without noticing it.

Brief Answer:
Possibly these are benign sebaceous cysts.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Although it requires a physical examination of a lump to reach at the nearest diagnosis, from your history it seems to me that you have got multiple sebaceous cyst of the scalp and on the back of the neck. These are benign lesions excepting for creating nuisance while combing the hair or might be a cosmetic problem.

If I were your doctor, I would advise you not to fiddle with these to avoid any secondary infection specially if there is any possibility of Diabetes Mellitus. In case these bumps increase, you might have to get these clinically assessed by a general surgeon in your area with related investigations for their removal if need be after confirming the diagnosis.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.

The skin moves over the lump on my neck and if I relax the neck the lump moves slightly too. Any concerns? The lump is smooth and regular .

Brief Answer:
Free mobility seems to be of no serious concern.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX ! Good to hear from you so soon.

The very fact that the lump is neither attached to the skin nor the deeper tissues signifies that it is a benign lump and of no concern. However, as I mentioned earlier, the diagnosis could be confirmed only by a physical examination and any related investigations by a general surgeon and if it increases in size or gives any other trouble, should be removed and sent for a histo-pathological confirmation.

You are free to ask in case of any further doubt. Thanks and good luck.
