Suggest Treatment For Heart Palpitations And Breathless When Having Cardiomyopathy
Question: Hi there! Having heart palpitations. Feeling breathless as well. I have cardiomyopathy. I am away from home. Saw doctor this morning and she said my heart was coping and stable. I feel terrible now...
Brief Answer:
do visit emergency room
Detailed Answer:
Dear madam
A patient of cardiomyopathy can have palpitation because of multiple reasons. We need to determine heart rhythm as well as cause for same. It may be related to use of salbutamol or ventorlin. This can be best done by getting an ECG done.
Whatever be type of cardiomyopathy and whatever be cause of palpitation, high heart rates cause breathlessness. This occurs due to decrease relax ability of heart. You may be having breathlessness due to lung problems too. Exact determination depends upon clinical examination. Therefore you must visit ER.
The episode may be very serious. Please do visit emergency room.

Thank you. I called my doctor and her colleague came out to see me. When he examined me my heart was beating so fast he could not count the rate. He gave me O2 which made me feel better and he drove me to hospital. My heart rate was over 250 when I got there. An ECG showed atrial fibrillation and the doctors were about to do cardioversion, but my heart slowed down by itself. The beat is very irregular though so I have to stay in hospital for more tests tomorrow. I am breathing O2 but still feeling SOB.

Detailed Answer:
Dear madam
The Atrial fibrillation(AF) needs to be reverted to normal sinus rhythm in most of cardiomyopathies, even if rate is controlled. Otherwise breathlessness may be persistent. On other hand AF may be a result of lung disease which itself can precipitate AF. Hence knowing the cause of AF is important. It would be better if you can tell about the type of cardiomyopathy you have and what is status of your lungs as per your doctor.
