Suggest Treatment For Hematoma On Buttocks Caused By An Injury
Question: I ran into a wall 8 days and severely bruised my right buttock. I did not it my back only my buttock. A hard lump appeared a few days later. I am on warfarin and lovenox for previous PEs. I have been applying ice and resting since this occurred. I went to ER a few days because of numbness, tingling, and weakening in right leg. The ER diagnosed me with a hematoma and sent me home. Since I am on blood thinners, the hematoma has not gotten any smaller. Should I be concerned?

I am sorry to hear that you have developed a large hematoma on your buttocks. This is a common side effect from taking blood thinners like warfarin and lovenox. These hematomas or large bruises are a result of trauma from sitting. As long as your protimes are within therapeutic range then you have nothing to be concerned about. The large lump is a collection of blood in the muscle and will take several weeks to completely be reabsorbed by the body.
There is no way to speed up the healing process. The only thing you can do is keep control of your warfarin and prevent further trauma.

Thanks you for the response. The ER doctor stated the numbness/weakness/tingling in right leg and foot could be due to hematoma pressing on the sciatic nerve. Apparently, where the hematoma is located is also where the nerve and a buttock vein is located. Is there a risk if the sciatic nerve is involved? I am concerned about my leg. It just feels weird.

I do agree with the ER doctor that the sciatic nerve maybe involved. With the hematoma touching or pressing on the nerve it will cause numbness and tingling and weakness of the lower leg. As the hematoma resolves the nerve will return to normal and the feelings you have will go away. This is not a permanent condition and should resolve with time.
