Suggest Treatment For Hemospermia

Posted on Mon, 26 Oct 2015
Question: Hi. I'm 20 years old and every now and then over the past few years I've experienced blood in my semen while engaging in oral sex. While receiving oral sex, I've felt no pain or discomfort. When I use the bathroom afterwards, I don't see any blood in my urine. It usually goes away eventually but this has been a recurring problem for me. I've seen doctors but they haven't found anything wrong with me. I'm thinking maybe I've been having this problem because I've held my semen in too long prior to ejaculation. I thought it could be blood vessels popping but I'm not sure. I've also thought it was obstruction or epididymitis. What do you think?

Brief Answer:
Hemospermia is common and treatable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i can understand your concern.
Your symptom is called hemospermia and is quite common among males.
It has no relation to having oral sex.
As you've been having it recurrently, you need to get a rectal examination, by a qualified Urologist. The blood originates from somewhere in the semen producing glands, like the seminal vesicles,or prostate gland, commonly.
You will need to get certain tests like, urine routine and culture, semen culture, blood sugar, creatinine, PSA,and an ultrasound scan of abdomen and a TRUS (trans rectal ultrasound scan). Also, STD tests, if you've had sex with more than one partner.
According to the reports and rectal examination, proper treatment will be advised.
Hope your doubts are cleared. If possible, avoid sex, till treatment is completed.
Wish you well.

In the past, I have seen different specialists and urologists about this and taken most of the examinations you mentioned, including the untrasound and rectal examinations, but they never found anything wrong with me. I dont have an STD. I'm just not sure what randomly causes it. I'm thinking I could have popped a blood vessel at some point but I don't know for sure.

Brief Answer:
Idiopathic(no cause found)hemospermia, is well known.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
If all the reports of tests advised by me were normal, you don't need to worry.
Some have an infection, causing the bleeding, which needs to be treated.
Some have other causes, like a tumor in the semen forming glands.
Many have this kind of bleeding, without any cause, and it's called 'idiopathic' bleed.
Just maintain good hydration, drinking about 10 glasses fluids daily.
Try to get your PSA done once annually, and ensure it remains normal.
Wish you well.
