Suggest Treatment For Hereditary Amyloidosis
Question: I recently found that my identical twin brother has amyloidosis. Am I also a candidate for this now that I found this out. We are both 80 years of age. I had a heart stent put in my heart in XXXXXXX of 2014. I have had no other health problems and am in good health now--other than a few "extra" pounds. I am considering getting a blood test for this. What do you think is my chance to contract this disease?

Well,there are several types of amiloidosis and one type is so called hereditary type that is genetically determined. However,this type is usually discovered in young age. So it is more probable that your brother has some other type which is multifactorial. It means that genetic may have some role but environmental factors are more important and in this case it is not likely that you will suffer from this disease. Especially if you don't have symptoms. You can do genetic test to see predisposition or do amyloidosis specific findings which will rule out disease. But generally,if you don't have symotms you probably don't have disease.
