Suggest Treatment For Herniated Disk Disease
Question: My name is XXXXXXX For the record I am Lori's husband - the owner of the account.
I was in a high speed MVA Dec 8 2008 and suffered a TBI. I have been fighting this with all kinds of therapy since. Last year - 2013 it was decided that my therapy should include physical therapy as it was decided I was not getting enough exercise on my own.
So I went through two periods of 8 weeks of PT with no problems ending in Fall 2013.
Sometime in Feb-Mar of this year 2014 I was sleeping in a chair and got woke up. I fell but did not think anything of it.
As time went on I developed a pain in my hip that continued to intensify. Finally in May I went to my Dr. WHo prescribed an x-ray ultrasound then finally MRI.
The MRI showed 5 bulging discs and a big bulge between L3-L4. He told me I had a pinched nerve which was caused by the bulge andprescribed physical therapy.
I have completed this physical therapy 8 wis. I feel no improvement. I DO NOT ANT SURGERY. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS? I CANNOT WALK WITHOUT PAIN AND SLEEPING IS VERY DIFFICULT.

Herniated disk disease of column is treated conservatively in up to 80% of cases.
Conservative treatment includes: few days rest, restricted physical activity for a couple of weeks, warm procedures on your lower back, NSAID drugs and pain killers, physical therapy ( in no or few symptoms periods, physical therapy is contraindicated in severe pain), swimming, periradicular and epidural corticoids and pain killers injection.
If these measures fail to improve symptoms, then is discussed decompressive surgery of affected nerve root.
In your case you tried physical therapy and pain killers, I think you should use NSAID drugs and discuss with your treating Doctor the possibility of spinal ( periradicular) or epidural corticoids and pain controllers ( e. g: Prednisolone and Marcain) of the affected nerve responsible for your symptoms.
Nerve to be injected is selected after a careful neurological examination correlated with imaging findings.
This procedure can be repeated up to three times in a 20 days intervals.
