Brief Answer:
Anti-histamines should help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Your mother has a sore throat possibly secondary to viral infection. It will take sometime to settle down. Until, then she can try the following.

1. Salt water gargling (Avoid salt water ingestion as it can affect blood pressure), atleast 6-8 times daily.

2. Throat soothen agents like strepsil, vicks or any lozenges. It reduces throat irritation and gives a cool feeling in throat.

3. If she has cold, she will require steam inhalation 2-3 times daily for 3-5 minutes. The cough which she has at present could be secondary to post-nasal drip. She can do steam inhalation. Along with it, anti-histamines like cetrizine will be helpful in reducing cold or blocked nose.

4. She can continue this until symptoms reduces. It would not affect her other medications. Due to anti-histamines, she might be a bit sleepy, ask her to avoid driving.

5. If symptoms persists or fever or severe headache starts, then she will require antibiotics like Amoxiclav or azithromycin. You will require a prescription from your doctor.

6. Avoid anything cold like icecreams. It will worsen symptoms.

Hope it helps.
