Suggest Treatment For High BP , High Blood Sugar Levels And Headaches
Question: My mother-in-lawa (age 76) has been taking Budesonide for lymphacitic colitis for 4 weeks. Medical hx includes type II diabetes, hypertension and colitis. She recently (in the last 3 days) has had severely high blood pressure (230/140), severe head ache, high blood sugar (237 2 hours after small meal), confusion (speech, memory) and most recently vomiting. She was at the ER yesterday and the doctor there just did standard blood work (no urine). All of that was normal. Gave IV hypertension med and sent her home to f/u with primary doc. She says food doesn't "taste good". Urinary tract infection possible?
Brief Answer:
UTI possible. Electrolyte imbalance possible.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully through the details provided. Indeed urinary tract infection is a possibility. There is a possibility of electrolyte imbalance. I would insist you to get her blood tested for Sodium, potassium and calcium levels as well.
Let me know if I could help further.

I forgot to mention that she has been drinking Powerade daily (upon advice from doctor because of losing fluids in diarrhea from colitis). She developed a taste for it and now drinks 32 oz bottle daily and only a cup of coffee in the a.m. and occasionally about 6 oz of iced tea with dinner. Is it possible that the electrolytes could be not LOW but HIGH because of this? Is it possible to get "poisoned" from sports drinks if you don't really need them? Thanks
Brief Answer:
No
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the update. I do not think that poisoning from sports drinks is likely. It will not cause any harm and would not create electrolyte imbalance. Rather, it would correct electrolyte imbalance, if any.
