Question: I am worried about my blood pressure, in the last 2 to 3 months it has been reading higher this morning when I woke up it was 164/118, this is the general area in which it has been for the past month. Doctor double my BP medication of Captopril from 25 mg to 50 mg and put me on a new medication of Amlodipine 5 mg. Not sure what to do at this point, does not seem to be going down.

Brief Answer:
Do low salt diet and exercise.

Detailed Answer:
HI XXXXXXX

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Welcome to HealthcareMagic.

See Blood pressure is controlled by medications , diet and exercise. If your diet and exercise are being done properly then your medication has to be revised.

But if you are not doing a good diet or proper exercise then you must start doing it before considering revision of your medication.

Also I need to know when did you doctor increased Captopril and added Amlodipine because Blood pressure medication will take time ( 1-2 weeks ) to show their maximum effect. If the change is recent then you can wait for a week more to see the result .

But if the change has been done more than 2-3 weeks ago then I think the dose of Amlodipine has to be increased to 10mg .

Hope this answers your query.

Any clarification feel free to ask .

Brief Answer:
Amlodipine dose has to be increased.

Detailed Answer:
HI XXXXXXX

Thanks for the follow up.

12 days is quite sufficient for the medicines to show the effect. So it means the dosage is not sufficient.

My advise is to increase the dose of Amlodipine from 5mg to 10 mg . Ask your doctor for this increment.

Also as said earlier you need to do aerobic exercise at least 20 minutes per day and be on a low salt diet.

Hope this answers your query.

Any clarification feel free to ask , if none kindly close the discussion and rate my answer.
